Myououin Temple

The temple is believed to have been founded in 807 by Kobo Daishi. The main hall employed an eclectic vocabulary consisting of the Japanese style overall and Chinese details. It is the oldest existing example of this approach. The five-story pagoda--a beautiful tower--is the fifth oldest among the national treasure towers of Japan, and is designated as an important cultural property along with the main hall.
