Goddess of Mercy of Abuto
This temple is said to have been built by Emperor Kazan in about 992, more than 1000 years ago, where the Goddess of Mercy is enshrined for prayers for safety at sea. The vermilion-lacquered Kannondo Temple was introduced in an Ukiyoe picture by Hiroshige Ando, as well as in Naoya Shiga's novel “Anya Koro," in reference to its beauty. It creates a splendid landscape that harmonizes with the natural surroundings of the Seto Inland Sea. Today the temple is designated as an important cultural asset of Japan, and has become widely known as a place of worship and prayer for easy child delivery and child rearing.
