Renjuku/Old Chazan Kan house
Chazan Kan (1748 - 1827), a Confucian scholar from the late Edo era, was born in Kannabe and learned the Zhu Xi studies in Kyoto at age 19. After that, he returned to his hometown and opened a private school. His school was later called “Ren-juku," which was a place of learning for a constant assemblage of about 20 students from all over Japan. Rai Saiyo once served as the school’s president. Even today the lecture hall, dormitory and residence of those days remain in evidence. A waterway, where the students were said to have washed their brushes or ink stones, a vegetable garden and a fish-breeding pond in front of the lecture hall look exactly as they did during the days of the school.
