Muronoki Song Monument

This song called “Manyo-shuka” was made by Otomo-no-Tabito when he stopped by in Tomonoura after completing his term of office in Dazaifu in the year 730. It is said that he prayed for a safe sea route to the sacred Muronoki tree with his wife Otomo-no-Iratsume when he set out for his new post. This monument shows the distress of a traveler who lost his beloved wife in Dazaifu in 728.
